GERD

GERD, otherwise known as Gastroesophageal Reflux, isn't an uncommon issue for infants and we were finally able to have Seth diagnosed. However, because he isn't in pain, fussy, or projectile vomiting there's really nothing to treat. The reflux is just something he'll have to outgrow, which is expected to happen sometime before his first birthday.

There are medications available to stop the spitting, but the pediatrician said he wouldn't use them on his own children because of possible side effects. He didn't go into detail and we didn't ask.

Other medications on the market would stop the symptoms if Seth had them, the fussiness, pain, etc. However, he doesn't seem at all bothered by the spitting. Ultimately, there's nothing to treat.

So, we'll just keep doing what we have been doing.

  • Keeping him upright after eating.
  • Going through multiple outfits a day, although I generally keep Seth in just a diaper, but with him going back to daycare that won't be possible after this weekend.
  • Constantly changing out bibs.
  • Running through a stack of receiving blankets that we use to wipe him and anything else.
  • Packing extra shirts in his diaper bag for the big(ger) people in his life in case we get the worst of it.
We also add 1 tablespoon of rice cereal to his bottle for every ounce of water. It makes his formula as thick as a milkshake, but it has helped. He still spits, but generally not as often or as much.

Our fingers are crossed that he outgrows this soon, and that he doesn't have issues with this into adulthood.
