Mommy's Sweet Pea

I have to laugh when I think about all the nicknames Sarah has had in the last four years. Most are long forgotten already, but a few linger.

One of the teachers at daycare started calling her "Sarah Smiles" when she was just 12 weeks old, and to this day still calls her "Sarah Smiles" each and every time she says her name.

I'm not sure when I started calling her "Miss Sarah". The name "Sarah" is Hebrew for "God's Princess". There could not be a more fitting name for Sarah given her last days in utero and her birth experience. Certainly she put her guardian to angel to work early. However, something does not permit me to call her "princess" (or at least not often). I need Sarah to stay grounded and not morph into a little diva. "Miss Sarah" is my version of "princess" and she is none the wiser.

Then there's "Sweet Pea". Where this came from I'll never know, but it's fitting. She is my little sweet pea. Sensitive, caring, and, well. . .sweet.

. . .and I'm not the only one to think so.

I had a moment to speak with Sarah's Ready-K teacher this past week. She told me Sarah is doing very well and that she is such a sweet little girl. She listens, loves to learn, and is independent.

(By independent I think she means that Sarah does a lot for herself without help, not that Sarah is a free-spirit type)

Sarah loves school. She has a new best friend named Lucy, shares her locker with a little girl named Maggie, and gets to see one of her fellow daycare graduates, Jake, at lunchtime since he's in kindergarten.

Recently I found out that Sarah's favorite class is computers. She likes music and art too, but she "really loves computers". She went into great detail about all the things she can do on them and how they work. I love seeing her interests and talents develop and St. Ursula's has opened up a whole new world for her. She was so ready for Ready-K.

It's been almost 8 months

I'm not sure why I'm posting this now. Eight months seems like such a random milestone. Why not 6? Why not wait until 12 months, a full year? But no, 8 months it is. Girls Weekend

In what may seem like complete craziness on my part, I want to take the Sarah and Emily to Disney World before school starts in the fall. I’m not kidding when I say it’s been a long year and I feel like we just need to get away to the happiest place on Earth for a few days. Kevin and I took the girls to Disney last January for his brother’s wedding so I do have some idea of what I’d be getting myself into. That helps. Sarah still talks about that trip. She remembers flying on the purple plane (Southwest), throwing up in the castle (at breakfast with the princesses), and riding Dumbo (she must have ridden it no less than 20 times and of course it had the longest lines). I still remember the sheer joy on her face when she met Mickey and Minnie and all the other characters too. Emily was sort of “eh” on meeting them. Hello World. It's me, Dana.

Sarah and Emily, my adorable daughters, are the "two little girls" going "for a walk in the wide, wide world". Bonus points if you know from which classic children's book this line was shamelessly stolen. . . and slightly modified. Although a writer by day, it may take me awhile to find my groove in these "off" hours as a creative writer while I share my life as a single, working mom of two with you. Here goes. . . I haven't always been single. And I haven't always been a mother. My husband Kevin and I were married at Holy Spirit Parish on May 7, 2005 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Nearly two years later we welcomed our first child, Sarah, into our lives on March 20, 2007. At 5lbs, 10oz she was much smaller than anyone had anticipated, but what she lacked in size she made up for in noise.
