Exciting Purchases

Sal and I have been living with two, three cushion sofas in our living room for five years now. It's great when we have a house full of people for birthdays and holidays, but for day-to-day living, it was making us crazy.

On Saturday, Sal said he was really over this arrangement, and I agreed. Without another thought we hauled our least favorite of the two out of the house and onto the curb. The living room was immediately improved, but then he decided to take it another step, and suggested we put the remaining couch in the basement. We can also move the tv and computer down there as well. That leaves us no furniture in the living room.

So, we went shopping.

We browsed and tried out dozens of couches at Levin's in Wexford. We also chose a table that will serve as a computer workstation. I'd also like two reading chairs to place on either side of the fireplace as well. After a butt-numbing two hours, we left without purchasing anything. We needed some time to think about it, and to just sleep on our options.

Sunday afternoon we returned. We tried out a couch we hadn't sat on the day before, and decided almost immediately that it was the one. We even liked the color and design of the version of it that they have in stock.

I also found a chair that is both big enough to curl into and comfortable. I chose a "willow" pattern that coordinates beautifully with the couch. It's like it was meant to be. 

We also decided to buy the computer table. . .until I realized I had left my wallet at home. We asked the saleswoman to write up our choices, and said that I would stop in today at lunchtime to make the purchase. The couch and table will be delivered Friday, and the chairs will be ready in 6 weeks. The store doesn't stock the fabric I chose, but it wasn't any more expensive.

I feel like we're finally slowly getting there with house projects - major progress on our basement reno, new HVAC, and updating our living room as if two grown-ups and not college students live there.

It's been almost 8 months

I'm not sure why I'm posting this now. Eight months seems like such a random milestone. Why not 6? Why not wait until 12 months, a full year? But no, 8 months it is. Girls Weekend

In what may seem like complete craziness on my part, I want to take the Sarah and Emily to Disney World before school starts in the fall. I’m not kidding when I say it’s been a long year and I feel like we just need to get away to the happiest place on Earth for a few days. Kevin and I took the girls to Disney last January for his brother’s wedding so I do have some idea of what I’d be getting myself into. That helps. Sarah still talks about that trip. She remembers flying on the purple plane (Southwest), throwing up in the castle (at breakfast with the princesses), and riding Dumbo (she must have ridden it no less than 20 times and of course it had the longest lines). I still remember the sheer joy on her face when she met Mickey and Minnie and all the other characters too. Emily was sort of “eh” on meeting them. Hello World. It's me, Dana.

Sarah and Emily, my adorable daughters, are the "two little girls" going "for a walk in the wide, wide world". Bonus points if you know from which classic children's book this line was shamelessly stolen. . . and slightly modified. I haven't always been single. And I haven't always been a mother. My husband Kevin and I were married at Holy Spirit Parish on May 7, 2005 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
