Vacation, Day 5, Maine
We had plans to leave around 8:30 since the Storches wanted to get home to their dogs by noon. However, it ended up taking us more time to pack-up so we left around 9:30. It was hard leaving, and I think Emmy took it hardest of all. She loves being around everyone and all the activity that comes with that.
At least we had adventures in Maine ahead of us.
We had great weather for traveling to Maine, but there are minimal interstates to travel East to West in New England. It's much more efficient to go North to South (or vice versa). However, New Hampshire to Maine is West/East so we had a two lane highway with lots of traffic for most of the drive.

We stayed for a couple minutes, and then hopped back in the car for the rest of the drive to Bar Harbor.
Bar Harbor has been on my bucket list for awhile, and it was what I had pictured it to be, a cute, little, touristy, seaside town. We had booked a hotel right downtown, on Main Street actually, because we weren't sure how walkable the town is or what the parking situation would be. It was a good choice. We were five minutes from the entrance to Acadia National Park, and right out our front door was a view of the harbor and everything the town had to offer.
| Cadillace Mountain |
We checked in around 3, dropped our bags and headed to Acadia. We had a short list of must-do items because we knew time was limited. We drove the Park Loop Road and found Thunder Hole, which wasn't at it's more interesting, but it was still pretty cool to see. We wanted to go up to Cadillac Mountain for sunset, but we needed to eat first.
Restaurants have limited seating, and reservations are recommended, which we didn't realize. While we were looking forward to a seafood restaurant with great views, we settled for a Mexican restaurant with no view. We were hungry and the food was good so we were happy with our choice.
| Thunder Hole in the Dark |
We didn't make it to Cadillac Mountain for sunset, we missed it by a few minutes, but we did make it before dark and that was nice. When Seth first heard mountain he got a little anxious remembering his trip up Mount Washington, but we assured him it would be nothing like that. He actully loved Cadillac Mountain once we got there.
The kids were asking to go back to Thunder Hole so we raced to get there while there was still some daylight left. It was mostly dark, but the tide had come in so areas that were completely dry on our first trip, were now under water. They were impressed, even though it still wasn't "thunder-y". Apparently the best times to experience the real magic of Thunder Hole is in the winter or when the sea is rough. In this picture Seth is looking into Thunder Hole. Sal and Emmy are on the viewing deck.
We stayed for a little while, and then decided to call it a night. We headed back to our hotel, and crashed.
