Wreck
Sal, Seth, and I were involved in what could have been a very serious accident. It is only by the grace of God that we walked away unscathed.
At about 11:15am we were stopped on a busy, two-lane thoroughfare in our township waiting to turn into the library following swim class. Out of nowhere we felt our car get hit and immediately smelled burning rubber. It turns out a Chevy Equinox, driven by an impaired driver, partially rear-ended/partially sideswiped our Mazda.
There are 100 ways in which it could have been worse, but despite having to slide out underneath the side curtain airbag, and get Seth out from the driver's side, we are fine.
Our rear passenger tire was blown out, but Sal was able to limp the car into the library driveway. She had semi-pushed us there anyway, and we are very fortunate oncoming traffic was able to stop.
We had many witnesses, and so many people stopped to ask if we were okay. I called 911 and the police arrived not long after, along with an ambulance which the driver of the other vehicle rode in to the hospital. Her blood test came back that she was impaired by an inhalant.
We must have stood there looking at damage for at least a half an hour, and neither one of us thought to take a picture. The car was towed by Critchlow's Auto Body, presumably called by the police.
One of the officers asked if we had a ride home, and I called the girls' dad to see if he'd be able to pick us up. Fortunately he was. Initially I thought we needed someone who would have a car seat in their vehicle, but then I remembered we had a spare for Seth in the trunk of Sal's car which we were able to retrieve.
The other driver was clearly at fault, we knew this prior to even talking to witnesses and the police, so now it's just a matter of working through this with insurance.
