The Poky Little Puppy

. . .and the laurel and hardy handshake goes to Kate for answering yesterday’s question correctly. It is The Poky Little Puppy which is one of the original 12 Little Golden Books and since 1942 has sold 15 million copies. It is truly one of the most popular children’s books of all times (and currently available at www.amazon.com).

But, popular or not, I have a passionate dislike for this poky (pokey?) little puppy. Oh sure, it’s a nice story, a real classic with wonderful repetition and alliteration, blah blah blah. BUT if you heard it over and over and over and over and over (get it?) and over again in a single day, let alone day after day, you would passionately dislike it as well.

The Poky Little Puppy has been a thorn in my literary side since my younger brother (Andrew), the “baby” and the only boy in a family of 3 children, decided it was his favorite. We all know what happens when a 2 or 3 year old decides something, anything, is his or her favorite. AND when he or she is “the baby” no one else stands a chance. “Again, again.” says the child (ahem, Andrew) and mothers (my mother), with the patience of a saint, look into their child’s big brown (blue or green) eyes and comply. And so it was with the Poke-ly (as Andrew referred to him) Little Puppy.

So why, you ask, why did you, Dana, choose this particular line to title your blog? The simple answers are, I love the irony. . . and it fits. As you’ll come to find out through this blog, if you don’t already know, I love to read. Novels, short stories, cereal boxes. . . I am passing my love of reading to Sarah and Emily (although this particular classic will never cross the threshold of my home) and so I googled, searched, and wracked my brain for a line from a children’s story that would somehow be broad enough to summarize a blog about our lives and just so happened to find it in The Poky Little Puppy.

It's been almost 8 months

I'm not sure why I'm posting this now. Eight months seems like such a random milestone. Why not 6? Why not wait until 12 months, a full year? But no, 8 months it is. Girls Weekend

In what may seem like complete craziness on my part, I want to take the Sarah and Emily to Disney World before school starts in the fall. I’m not kidding when I say it’s been a long year and I feel like we just need to get away to the happiest place on Earth for a few days. Kevin and I took the girls to Disney last January for his brother’s wedding so I do have some idea of what I’d be getting myself into. That helps. Sarah still talks about that trip. She remembers flying on the purple plane (Southwest), throwing up in the castle (at breakfast with the princesses), and riding Dumbo (she must have ridden it no less than 20 times and of course it had the longest lines). I still remember the sheer joy on her face when she met Mickey and Minnie and all the other characters too. Emily was sort of “eh” on meeting them. Hello World. It's me, Dana.

Sarah and Emily, my adorable daughters, are the "two little girls" going "for a walk in the wide, wide world". Bonus points if you know from which classic children's book this line was shamelessly stolen. . . and slightly modified. Although a writer by day, it may take me awhile to find my groove in these "off" hours as a creative writer while I share my life as a single, working mom of two with you. Here goes. . . I haven't always been single. And I haven't always been a mother. My husband Kevin and I were married at Holy Spirit Parish on May 7, 2005 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
